Meditating along a prairie path,
Soothed by the susurrant sounds
Of dry grass' whispered prayers.
Clarion crow-call counterpoints.
Reflexively, eyes follow the shadow
Of a high hawk's soaring search;
Its shade surfing bluestem waves,
Leaving absolute stillness in its wake.
All around are stories to be read:
Soft drifting down from fallen prey;
Prairie crop-circles of deer bivouacs;
Coyote scat full of fur, bone and seeds.
I pass on, hiking through and out.
Water collects in a boot-print crater.
My ephemeral passing woven into
The ever shifting essence of prairie.
